HISTORY
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

xxxx(☆彡) Within a multiverse known as The Cathedral, there are two dimensions which are more prominent than any other - Reality and the Dreamscape. Both go by many names, but (in this tale) the latter is more important even though both are intricately intertwined. The latter is known as the Dreamscape, the Realm of Dreams, the Dream World, or - for the old gods - Yustern. The Dreamscape is a realm in which the dreams, thoughts, ideas, and stories of all kinds flood into it from alternate planes and become reality. Once thought to be nonexistent or but the subconscious mind, it has been discovered by a few dimensions to be real. It was a place the soul fled to during dreaming, only to return home once the host awoke. No harm ever came of these souls and all beings within the realm lived in peace, communicating directly with their gods (the Guardians) and receiving their wisdom. These gods did not permit anything inherently evil into the realm, be it ideas, living things, or even disease. "Dreams" withholding that of forbidden nature were deemed "Nightmares" and cast into oblivion. However, as cliche as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end.

xxxxWhen the protective field - invisible to the naked eyes of mortals - was torn open by the sub-deity Equilibrium, an ancient realm thought lost stirred from its deep slumber. The Nightmares which inhabited it lurched forward from the newly created wound as an intangible substance. They devoured Dreams and became the things they were destined to be, taking shape of everything the Guardians had deemed evil. Beasts tore down city walls, disease and famine decimated entire species, and many fell ill to the sicknesses of the mind. Men butchered each other both on the streets and on the battlefield, children were abandoned, homes were burned, and people drank themselves sick. All life was ravaged and chaos reigned. As quoted from an ancient text, "It is the dawn of the end of the world. We live at the end of the final era, the end of all. The gods no longer speak to us, I know this, yet heretics run rampant saying they've heard the words of the Guardians. Innocence and peace no longer live. Purity has been ripped from this realm. It has been raped, abused, and torn asunder. I see Lurian falling from the sky - wingless. I see beasts walking the streets. This realm has shifted and continues to contort. It is being choked. It is dying, of this I'm sure. . ." Whilst the change wasn't as abrupt as history commonly displays, it still shook the realm just as deeply.

xxxxAbout five decades after the Nightmares invaded the realm, the largest tear (named Acantha by those who could observe it with magic) sucked up one of the largest floating islands. The influx of Dreams and Nightmares was so catastrophically enormous in that moment that the Nightmares were able to become, not an existing concept, but something entirely original to them. An uncountable amount of Nightmares, instead of becoming something else entirely, gained consciousness. Unbent by an idea that they would've become, their new power and thought consumed them. These Nightmares became a being that called itself Jzsikirophid. Whilst the name was never given a translation, the denizens of the Dreamscape deemed that it must've meant the Lord of Havoc, the Harbinger of Chaos, the Lord of True Death, and anything similar. The mountain-sized god emerged from the beyond. Then, in a show of raw power, promptly brought a floating island down from the sky and onto the Lurian city Naisria, destroying roughly half of it. Jzsikirophid then reached into the sky, grabbing millions of Nightmares within his palm, before bringing his fist down onto the ground. Upon opening his fist, legions of Rith poured out to wreak havoc on the rest of the metropolis. It was then that he proclaimed, "Worship me or perish." It was a simple, yet effective command. Yet, even though many bowed, the Rith did not discriminate with whom they killed. As the city burned, a Guardian descended from the heavens to banish Jzsikirophid back to the plane from whence he came. The battle lasted but five minutes before the Guardian's body fell upon a mountain range, throat having been ripped from their body. It was here that the Dreamscape fell into its darkest age, one of unrelenting torment from Jzsikirophid and constantly under siege from the Rith. Many settlements and cities were toppled, some erased from existence. Much of history was lost with the burning of books; most of history was either forgotten or became misinterpreted. Those who dreamed in alternate realms started to become trapped within this one. Some land was even decimated as well, erasing a good number of the life the Guardians themselves had created. The only reason few races went completely extinct during this period was due to the persisting idea of them in alternate realms.

xxxxSwallowed under the formidable shadow of the Lord of Havoc, the people did not see an end to the darkness until the light was upon them. The Guardians finally answered the prayers of their lost people, severing Jzsikirophid's connection to his armies and casting him into nothingness. There is a widespread belief that he is dead, but there are a few who hold onto the idea that he will return in the form of "The Seifer", a child born from a forbidden union.

xxxxIt has been roughly several thousand years since the defeat of Jzsikirophid, and the realm has yet to completely recover. Forests have grown back, battlefields have been covered, and new civilizations have cropped up, among other things. However, there are cities that remain in ruin; natural disasters, famine, disease, and war still exist; and the Nightmares, along with what they manifest, still persist. Yet, life somehow manages to stagger on, no matter how bitter and corrupt it has become.

IN AND OUT OF THE REALM
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

xxxx(☆彡) There are a few methods in which beings get out of and into the realm itself. Beings born or transported into the realm can only escape through portals which spawn randomly in areas that have the following two qualities: the fabric of reality is thin and magic is particularly strong and volatile. These portals are only open for short periods. Rith are the only creatures within the realm that cannot cross these thresholds and must use an alternate method - the Ark. The Ark is a portal made from the fallen Guardian's rib and carved with unreadable symbols and ancient sigils. A Rith family runs the Ark and Rith must pay to pass through it.

As for beings entering the realm, it can only be done through deep sleep, a ritual, or through a portal which has randomly spawned.
GEOGRAPHY
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

xxxx(☆彡) The geography of the Dreamscape is wild and varied. There are swaths of colorful jungles, sweltering swamps, vast deserts, deep valleys, mystical forests, and everything in between. The land itself is broken by deep canyons and the boney backs of mountains. Sections of the realm are particularly lacking in what could be perceived by Reality as the laws of physics. Various sparse settlements, farmsteads, and the like break the flow of nature here and there, populated by people who somehow survive in these otherworldly environments. It's surrounded by the tallest and most frigid of mountains that have never been passed by anything but gods. Yet, despite the sheer size of the realm (one of which would take four years by horse to cross from one end to the other), it continues to expand ever so slowly.

CITIES

xxxx(☆彡)esh'snk ;
tishterlach ; It is the only Rith settlement to not only remain standing for years, but untouched by the Lurian. It is concealed at the base of the Oshlin mountains, underneath a massive geological ark that conceals it from any prying eyes above. It is surrounded by tall, stone walls and is riddled with guard towers that act as protection against the Yun. The culture within this city varies widely from the Rith who dwell beyond it.
valssance ; Located on the floating island of Sijhyyd, it is the last refuge for Lurian. It is likely the most well-guarded city of all the realm, even boasting magical forcefields to shield it from raids and large beasts. Access to it can only be achieved by flight and one must gain passage beyond its walls via the city guards. However, even then, one is only allowed through if they are both a Lurian and "uncorrupt". The only exception to that rule are Messengers. This city is not as proud as its appearance due to what goes on within. Moreover, it also overlooks the ruins of Naisiria - which acts as a constant reminder of the Lurian's tragic history.

xxxx(☆彡) naisiria ; It was once the most formidable city in all of the realm. It was large enough that it would take a full day to cross from one end to the other on foot. Its architecture was the most advanced and well-crafted of its time, with tall spires, monumental churches, complex structures, and other wonders which inspired awe in any visitor to the city. However, the glory days of this behemoth have since passed. In the present, roughly half of the city is at rest underneath a collapsed floating island. Its mountainous shadow is cast over the crumbling ruins, which are being slowly reclaimed by nature. Moreover, various beasts - both ancient and new alike - have made their home here. This, doubled with the occasional Lurian raids and unstable buildings, make this city all the more dangerous to traverse.

NATURE OF IT
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

xxxx(☆彡) Given the Dreamscape is - in essence - more chaotic than many other realms, magic is considered much the same. The nature of magic within the Dreamscape is rather unstable; it tends to not bend to the will of mortals (or even some immortals) as easily as it will in other realms. Thus, when casting, spells may simply not work, not work properly, fizzle out, or not be as powerful as one would like. However, gaining mastery over it can make one incredibly powerful.


TRANSITIONING
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

xxxx(☆彡) Masters of magic in other realms are often reduced to fumbling idiots within the Dreamscape as magic itself simply won't behave. Thus, casters must relearn how to cast magic within the realm. If they were to leave the realm before learning, they will be able to cast their spells the same as before. On the bright side, becoming skilled in casting within this realm may cause one to be even more powerful of a caster in their home realm. Yet, one should be wary for they may accidentally cast too powerful of a spell within their home realm as they will not be used to the sudden "ease" of casting.


SCHOOLS OF MAGIC & TUTORING
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

xxxx(☆彡) Given the nature of magic, aspiring wizards and the like seek tutors or schools to master magic. There are many schools and universities dedicated to teaching the casting of magic and anything related to it, as well as individuals who take on apprentices. Moreover, due to the nature of magic within the realm, it takes many long years to gain complete mastery of even one school/type of magic. Thus, most will only master one or two schools in their lifetime, with or without dabbling in a few spells in other schools.


HOW IT'S VIEWED
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

xxxx(☆彡) Magic is something is not unusual to be seen, especially in certain parts of the realm. In other words - it's extremely common. What's uncommon is seeing an individual who's truly a master of magic; what's rare is an individual who's a master at more than one school of magic. The only time it isn't surprising for an individual to be a master at more than one school is if the individual is a powerful being, such as a dragon or a Messenger.

Magic is generally accepted in the realm, with some cultures taking greating liking to or hatred for certain types of magic. Generally - but not always - necromancy is the most hated and disdained form of magic.


METHODS OF CASTING
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

xxxx(☆彡) Their are a great many methods of casting; though, they aren't exactly interchangeable. Some methods of casting are more difficult than others. Some spells can only be cast in certain ways, such as through ritual. Methods of casting include, in order of least difficult to most (not including rituals as difficulty can vary): wand, hands, auditory, and thought. Of course, certain spells require a combination of wand/hand and auditory, ritual and hand motions, or some other combination. Some spells require having some form of materials. Moreover, for most users, magic is derived from the realm itself - very few beings have a composition of magic within themselves. However, each individual has a defined "well of magic" that cannot be grown or shrunk unless it is by ritualistic means or through a powerful being. This "well of magic" defines how much a user can cast before becoming drained and how powerful of spells a user can cast.

conjuration ; This school consists of spells that summon objects and/or creatures from another plane or from another location.

evocation ; This school consists of spells that are combative and cause direct damage.
illusion ; This school consists of spells that deceive the senses.
necromancy ; This school consists of spells that curse and raise the deceased.
transmutation ; This school consists of spells that change matter and energy.
