❝ only fools will tell you that there any gods other than the dragons in this world. ❞
DRAGONS
There are few creatures that are as impactful as the Dragons. Although the shape that they take can vary depending on the aether that they feed off, all dragons maintain a reptilian appearance and all dragons are the lords of whatever habitat they take. All True Dragons sustain themselves by consuming aether. For the smaller dragons, this can be as simple as consuming crystals, absorbing the aether of an area particularly rich with aether but for the Elder Dragons, entire continents can be sapped of aether and life when they wish to feed.

As of such, the Elder Dragons made an accord with the other races and swore that they would only awaken if a massive influx of aether caused the world to become unbalanced. Now, they hibernate and designate Scions - a child of an Elder Dragon and their bonded Dragonkin to act an emissary of the Elder Dragon's will. There are currently six Elder Dragons and therefore six species of dragon and dragonkin.

Svarog the Eternal Flame, Forest-Eater and the Sun's Fury is the Elder Dragon of Fire. Svarog claims to be the King of all Dragons, and his servants are often found fighting with other dragons and "lesser races" in order to assert his dominance. He sleeps within the World's Spine, a chain of large volcanoes which are said to erupt with his sleeping breaths. All fire dragons and dragonkin are children of Svarog. His Scion is known as the Scion of the First Flame.

Fire dragons command the aspect of flame and can breath fire and magma. Heat does not affect them, most living within sun-baked deserts, volcanoes or hot springs. Most are known for their red scales, although the shape that they take is varied based on their landscape. Sand dragons have been known to bury themselves under the sand, waiting for their prey, whereas Magma Dragons submerge themselves in molten rock, allowing it to harden into a solid coat of rock. Fire dragons are known to seek challenges from any race that thinks they can match their strength and devouring the aether of any that do not provide them with a good enough challenge.

Hyperion the First Hydra, the World Serpent and End of All Things is the Elder Dragon of Water. Hyperion is a secretive elder dragon, unglimpsed by most mortals and preferring to let his envoys deal with the politics of the other Elders. It is said that he was the first Elder Dragon to agree to seal himself away, gladly hiding himself away from the world and away from the arguing of his siblings. His Scion is Scylla and Charybdis, a Sea Serpent and Dragonkin respectively that protect the seas from those who would seek to pollute them, making them especially feared by industrialists.

Water dragons are generally secretive creatures that tend to stay away from the other races. Their dragonkin are more commonly seen, being able to breath upon land and water due to their gills and warn those that have disturbed lakes, rivers, seas to leave. To cultures that respect the water, they will often find fish, clean water and shelter from the wrath of the tides.

Jormag the Frostwalker, Lord of the North and World's End is known most by those that inhabit the freezing poles of the world. Patron to the Adrestrian Empire who he protected from the Elven before the accord, Jormag is one the most friendly to the other races. She is a calm and even-tempered dragon who likes to plan ahead and strategies. She does not support the Accord, but is bound by the wrath of her siblings as to not break the Accord. Jormag's Scion, Hraesvelgr and Shiva still work with the Empire to help them free those captured by the Elven.

Ice Dragons are a race which seek to help those that wish to survive in their inhospitable climates. They are usually keen planners, and do not act without thinking through their options first. They look down upon those that seek to enslave, imprison or harm others unjustly. Anyone looking for a stalwart ally against evil would be wise to seek out the aid of a Frost Dragon, even if they must travel to inhospitable lands to find one.

Kralkatorrik the Earthshaker, Branded Scourge and Teller of Fates is the Elder Dragon of Earth. It is unknown where he slumbers, some saying that he is the great continent that the world inhabits. His wings are said to be made of Kralkite, a miraculous crystal said to be unbreakable. Kralkatorrik was one of the true terrors that caused the Accord to be made as he would drain the aether of the world itself, leaving ground unable to grow plant life. Some said that he killed Mordremoth, the primordial dragon of earth to inherit his powers. Kralkatorrik does not have a Scion as children of Kralkatorrik were used against him to seal him away. Instead, Glint, Kralkatorrik's first daughter and Caithe, the first earth dragonkin keep him sealed away and asleep until Glint is strong enough to kill Kralkatorrik and absorb his aether to become the new Elder Dragon.

Raijin the Stormlord, Fury of the Skies and the Divine Drummer is the Elder Dragon of Lightning. Raijin is revered for his ability to conjure up powerful storms that would either cause destruction or give vital rain to crops and plants. Raijin was worshipped in the East and is said to sleep in a great temple at the heart of the Godswood. Some Viera tribes worship Raijin as their patron. He is also holds dominion over the Stormplains, a vast untamed wilderness home to many tribes that have managed to avoid industrialisation.

Storm dragons are known for being impulsive, carefree and more interested in playing tricks on other races and dragons than protecting anything. Fights between Storm dragons are not uncommon, although the fights are more like playful games that meaning any real harm. They can change their disposition on the flip of a coin however, going from playful trickster to wrathful stormcaller at the smallest of slights.

Astrope the Voice of the Tempest is the Elder Dragon of Air. Accounts of Astrope vary, describing a feathered dragonness that soared through the clouds without a need for wings. Whilst some cultures claim that she was a benevolent figure that provided good winds for sailors, the Aegyl in particular view her as their mortal enemy. In Aegyl tales, Astrope was furious with the Aegyl for growing wings, stating that her and her children were the only great race that belonged in the skies and tried to strike them down. In retaliation, Feolthanos struck Astrope down from the sky, giving her a mortal injury that she still recovers from this day.

Air dragons are the only dragons which sport feathers. Most also lacks wings, being able to fly effortlessly without the need for wings. They are generally known as flighty and inconsistent, ignoring the mortal world and the politics of other dragons in order to simply travel the world. Most Air Dragons would rather run away than get involved in the affairs of others.

❝ i saw a vision of a world where the world had been reduced to nothing but a crystal sand and all life had been twisted into something... not unholy, but something wrong all the same ❞
DAWNBRINGERS
Created by corruption of light-aspected aether, Dawnbringers are what are left of worlds swallowed by light. The inhabitants are corrupted and warped in many a way, skin becoming bleached white, eyes becoming completely white. Some take on the form of angelic creatures, whilst others become multiple limbed monsters that take up arms against anything that has dark-aspected aether within them. They seek to take over worlds that are not corrupted by light by destroying them, twisted by the desire for righteousness.

It is incredibly for a Dawnbringer to come to this world, but those that do make it must be dispelled or defeated quickly before they cause untold destruction. A single Dawnbreaker can wipe out a city within a week.

❝ your deepest desires, manifested, or your hatred personified, they are everything that are wrong with the races, and they wish to make us suffer for it. ❞
NIGHTKIN
Nightkin are creatures created by a corruption by darkness. Unlike the Dawnbringers, Nightkin fall into two categories ; devils and demons. Whilst the approaches of corrupting mortals can vary within the types, devils seek out planes corrupted by light and destroy Dawnbreakers as their mission whilst demons simply seek to drag as many mortals down with them. Nightkin can transform others in Nightkin without needing to drag them to their plane.

Examples of Nightkin include the Tauri, minotaur-like soldiers that simply seek to cause as much bloodshed as possible and come into the mortal world to kill. Succubi and Incubi are manipulators who use someone's desires to influence them and corrupt them all the while, posing as mortals with powerful magics. Ahriman are bat-like creatures that have venom that causes frenzy. For some unknown reason, Nightkin have a much easier time crossing over to other worlds with Succubi and Incubi being the most common than Dawnbringers.

❝ never go to Strahd - you won't return as a mortal. ❞
VAMPIRES
The origins of vampires are unclear. All vampires can be traced back to the city of Strahd and the Vampire Lord Sorin Marklov. Some say that Sorin managed to absorb the aether of a succubus somehow and became a Nightkin himself, although most scholars would agree that vampires are no more nightkin than humans are dragons.
